Reno is a pretty populous town, since there are casinos bringing in tourism revenue and the town is kind of big in general. One thing that I have noticed since I moved here is how many great restaurants there are, and I’m always finding something new that I can enjoy. Not everyone in Reno knows which restaurants are the best, whether you are a tourist visiting Reno or you’ve been here as long as me. As such, I thought that I would use my extensive knowledge of the Reno cuisine life to review my favorites in town.
The first Reno restaurant that I am going to talk about is not just a personal favorite of mine, but of all my friends that I have taken to lunch here as well. Personally, I think that Pisces Sushi is the best restaurant for sushi in town. Ijji’s is also pretty great, but there are a few things that I think Pisces Sushi does better. First of all, the variety on the menu is better. Ijji’s has a special location for each aspect (hibachi, sushi, etc) but Pisces Sushi just gives you everything you want in one location.
This location is in South Reno, but even if there are sushi places that are closer I would still recommend going here instead. Although the overall menu choice isn’t the same as having three separate restaurants, the menu here incorporates something for a person of every taste. Offering a lot of different food doesn’t mean a whole lot if the food itself isn’t very good though, right? That’s where the chefs separate themselves from the competition.
Pisces Sushi has great sushi, but the chefs didn’t stop there. They went even deeper into the cuisine and made the restaurant Asian fusion as well. For those of you who don’t know what Asian fusion is, it just means that the dishes combine aspects of American and Asian cuisine. You get the best of each, so it is pretty much a win-win situation regardless. I don’t have one specific favorite roll, but there are three ones at the top (just like these restaurants). Those three would be the Zodiac, the Donald Duck, and the cotton candy rolls.
There are a few different rolls named after Disney characters, but I have to say that the Donald Duck is my favorite. It probably helps if you have an appreciation for sushi beforehand, but if you have never tried it then you will likely get hooked. I know I did. Another thing that this Reno restaurant does great is the service. Lots of restaurants have waiters who either bother you too much, or they leave you alone the whole time. Both of those situations are bad, and a good waiter or waitress will know how to balance it out.
Pisces Sushi’s servers aren’t just helpful though, they are also very nice to you. I love being greeted with a smile upon entering a restaurant. And this wasn’t just the first time, either. Each time I go for sushi, I know not to expect frowns or unhappy staff. I have also found that the staff are very knowledgeable of the menu, and if you are uncomfortable pronouncing a roll then they pretty much already know what you are going to say.
They can also offer suggestions, and I have never had any major complaints with the items that were suggested to me. Overall, I would say that Pisces Sushi is definitely one of the better restaurants that you will eat at in your lifetime. Even if you only go once just to try it, I would still encourage you to do that. Go online and read some of the great online reviews if you don’t believe me.
Burger Me is a good alternative to sushi if you’re more inclined towards eating burgers instead of sushi. Burger Me is found in the Summit Sierra Mall in Reno, right next to the theater. I have eaten a burger before my movie plenty of times, and if you’re looking for an affordable one then this is your place. It’s becoming more and more common that burger places in Reno offer garlic fries and sweet potato fries, but I am glad to say that they’re not as good as Burger Me’s. Believe it or not, there was one diner in Reno I visited that served my meat undercooked.
That’s a serious health violation, and luckily I was in a good mood then. Makes me wonder what their hood cleaning company would say about them. One issue that a lot of Reno restaurants struggle with is pricing. It’s tough to keep prices low when the rent is high. Fortunately for anyone with families or large groups, Burger Me shies away from the higher prices. The quality if their food is still maintained, and I have no idea how they do it. If you want to learn more, as I did, make sure you read some of the positive reviews. That’s where I get all of my food suggestions now.
Finally, there is Butcher’s Kitchen CHAR-B-QUE. You can get burgers here as well, but I like the balance between sandwiches and salads as well. Here, you will be eating in South Reno again. My favorite dish to order at Butcher’s Kitchen CHAR-B-QUE is the pulled pork burrito, so that just tells you how much choice there is on the menu. Normally sandwiches would be my thing, but this restaurant doesn’t really serve any bad food. I thought I would get something different this time, and it’s nice to ask the waiter what they like personally.
Again, you will find great prices and service here. The reason I think that Butcher’s Kitchen CHAR-B-QUE is one of Reno’s best is because of the accommodations for business lunches, though. I have eaten here with a decent amount of large groups and there are never any issues when we eat. All of the dishes we have been served with have never been dirty or anything like that, which is always a plus. If you see a dish at a restaurant that is dirty, you should probably eat somewhere else. No restaurant like that would ever find a place on my list. A lot of the people who I have brought to Butcher’s Kitchen CHAR-B-QUE on business lunches have given it positive online reviews, so don’t just take my word for it.
If you eat at any of these restaurants frequently enough, you will start to recognize tons of people at these restaurants. Most people who try them get hooked.
